Slowing down at Cat Island

A passing boat sent us this

Within an hour of that picture we had entered the turbulent water between the two islands and also changed course so the wind was now coming dead astern. We went to a wing on wing with boom and main on one side and spinnaker on the other. Each time the following sea would push too hard it would cause the spinnaker to collapse or the main to jibe with a bang. This routine was not stopped soon enough and the spinnaker wrapped itself around the forward stay in two different directions leaving the bits of free sail that remained filled with wind and pulling the knot tight. The chute that assists in lowering the spinnaker was also tangled at the top. After wrestling for a half hour I was able to lower and stuff this tangled mess through the hatch. Thankfully nobody was sailing by taking pictures then😂

Cat Island, childhood home of Sydney Portier, will be our home for the next 9 nights. Most days we’ll have a project or an outing.  We are just off the beach from a cell tower so I can research, email and catch up on the blog. Or just in case something bizarre happens at the Oscars I’ll be ready for that too. Mostly I am getting into slow mode. So goes the days…it’s ok by me.
We spent the first day touring about the roads of the Fish Fry area. While walking we met a man originally from Madrid Spain. He is single handing through the islands and enjoyed hearing about all the things we liked in Madrid. We ended up back at the fish fry for a Kalik and some appetizers.

The next day was the Hermitage visit.

This 1/3 scale monastery Pastor Jerome built for himself on top of the highest point in the Bahamas is a joy to visit.   Climbing the final approach are stone stairs and the stations of the cross.
He has risen

We sat up there alone for a while and you could get a sense of what drew him to this special place.

Ice cream smiles are the best
After that much exercise we went back to the fish fry area to get ice cream.  It is uncommon to find scooped ice cream in the out islands and the first for us treat since we left Florida was very good.

Laundry on left. A new building and room for expansion is uncommon and welcome

Monday the 28th got to enjoy a new laundromat about a half mile from where we land on the beach. A clean, comfortable, bright space with free Wi-Fi was a good place to spend the morning. The humidity dropped with the passing front so this afternoon I successfully made Spaghetti that did not stick in the machine.
